Differ We Must

An Evening with Steve Inskeep

Wednesday, October 18th | 6:00 pm

WITF’s The Spark Travels to the Harrisburg Book Festival for a conversation with Steve Inskeep, author and host of NPR’s Morning Edition. Scott LaMar, host of The Spark, will lead a conversation on Inkseep’s new work of historical nonfiction, Differ We Must: How Lincoln Succeeded in a Divided America.

In 1855, with the United States at odds over slavery, the lawyer Abraham Lincoln wrote a note to his best friend, the son of a Kentucky slaveowner. Lincoln rebuked his friend for failing to oppose slavery. But he added: “If for this you and I must differ, differ we must.” In Differ We Must, Inskeep illuminates Lincoln’s life through sixteen encounters, some well-known, some obscure, but all imbued with new significance.

Inskeep draws upon his skill at bridging divides and building constructive debate to form a fresh and compelling narrative of Abraham Lincoln’s life. In the process, he expands our understanding of a politician who held strong to his moral compass while navigating between corrosive political factions.

The conversation will be recorded for a future episode of The Spark; listen weekdays at noon on NPR member station WITF 89.5 & 93.3, or anytime on your favorite podcast platform.
